A change of mind …

… Julian Barnes: I was wrong about EM Forster | Books | The Guardian. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

I read Howards End  just a few years ago. I thought the characters interesting, but the message ("only connect") lame.

  1. My complaint: in the books I have read, everything is treated lightly and ironically--one might be reading Voltaire--and then one gets to marriage, and the tone becomes that of Tolstoy trying to persuade the reader, and himself, that this is a very serious matter. Well, it is, but somehow the transition doesn't work.

  2. I think that's a very accurate observation.
